Patreon's Service Fee

December 8, 2017 - News Post

2017-12-14 edit - Due to a rather large backlash, Patreon has reversed their plans to update their fees. Feel free to ignore this comic and the second half of the news.

The Jeff draws a random reader's face sweepstakes generated quite a response. No more submissions will be accepted as of…. NOW!

Thank you to everyone who entered. I will admit, I was a bit surprised by the response. Two more of you read this news than I thought.

No winner has been selected as of yet. I still need to devise a grand way to choose one of you, but I'd like to get it out of the way soon (I hate drawing). Check your email every 30 seconds over the next several days, you may be the winner.

As for today's comic. You can read the panel 2 quote here, and the panel 3 here. TechCrunch did some nice coverage of the issue. One of these days, I'm going to start citing references in the comic itself.

In case you were curious, last month Patreon collected 5.30% from me in processing fees. Under the new system, they would charge my patrons 12.28% for the same dollar amount. That's a pretty hefty change.

I am, of course, not thrilled with these fees. Patreon is my sole source of income on this comic, and I love them for it. But they are making it difficult for patrons to contribute small amounts. As I write this, I've only lost 2 patrons. Should more of you wish to do the same, I would not blame you. You don't have to say anything. I completely understand, and I'll be seeking out alternatives soon.

I actually wrote several more paragraphs of ranting, but today's comic had far too many words. I think you've been though enough already.

Go enjoy your weekend. I'll be here, mentally preparing myself to look at one of your faces.
