Today’s comic is a weird subject for me.
I’m in my 30s, and it took until only a few months ago to discover: Many of the heroes living exciting lives are my age or younger. It started innocently enough with Power Rangers and Mutant Ninja Turtles, but the trend never stopped.
Captain Kirk and Spock were 35 when the original series aired. 35! These people were old long before I was born. Now I’m wondering why I don’t work on a starship.
Christian Bale in Batman Begins? 31. I haven't even inherited a giant trust fund yet.
Liz Lemon at the start of 30 Rock? 36. Is it too late to get a job as a head writer on a tv show? (yes)
Don’t get me wrong. I’m fine with getting older (at least as long as all my parts are still working). It’s simply bending my brain that my shouts at the TV has changed so quickly. I went from, “How do you expect me to believe that 30-something is a high school student?!?” Directly into: “How can a 30-something have a job that’s so much better than mine?!?”
I have no idea why I’m focusing on this. My birthday is neither coming up nor significant. Maybe it’s because I just found out that Kirk and Spock were 35. They both seem so responsible. I wonder when that's supposed to kick in for me.
