Here are some sources to back up the dialogue today’s comic:
- Comcast is leaking the names and passwords of customers’ wireless routers
- A bug in cell phone tracking firm's website leaked millions of Americans' real-time locations
- TeenSafe phone tracking app leaks thousands of Apple ID accounts
And that’s enough REAL news.
Now to talk about what’s on everyone’s mind: ThunderCats.
In case you missed it, the 1985 show ThunderCats is getting a silly kid-friendly reboot called ThunderCats Roar. It looks looney, goofy, and stupid. Naturally, everyone online is freaking the hell out.
I must’ve been asked my thoughts on this 12 times since Saturday. So here’s my opinion for everyone who's left: Meh.
I feel your pain, but I can no longer get worked up over this sort of thing.
Anyone who has lived through the last decade has watched as their childhood was repackaged and sold over and over again. Sometimes, it’s great: Star Trek 2009 was refreshing and fun. I even enjoyed the first Transformers movie. But... that’s about it.
Ghostbusters 2016 was a slapstick-infused mess, I didn’t even bother with GI Joe, and Star Wars is simply exhausting.
I’m actually interested in the new take on ThunderCats. Without a reboot of Space Ghost, we would never have Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. Without the reboot of Sealab 2020, we’d never have Sealab 2021. Without the 2011 reboot of ThunderCats, we wouldn’t have the ThunderCats Roa--Oh... nevermind.
Yes, I know those other shows were geared for adults, and this one is not. I’m not the target audience, yet I’m certain someone out there will like it. How bad could it be? If Teen Titans and Batman can survive all their weird incarnations, ThunderCats should be fine, right?
Right?
The point is, there used to be a zero percent chance that I would purchase anything ThunderCats this year. Now I'd put that around 3%. In the end, doesn't that matter more than whether or not we like the show?
Oh, and prepare for me to be a complete hypocrite in the very near future. I am planning to get unreasonably angry over the live action He-man movie currently in the works. Sony has until 2019 to release a movie or they lose the rights. Due to that rushed timeline, I am absolutely certain it will be hot steaming garbage (although I am quite optimistic about Netflix’s upcoming She-Ra reboot).
Oh well... At least the old ThunderCats episodes from the 80s are still out there. They’re terrible and clunky, but for some, they’re nostalgic gold. If you’re worried about the new ThunderCats, take a moment to enjoy the original until your childhoods are ruined by the next franchise reboot.
It won't be long.
