“Yes sand.”
That's what they're teaching me in my improv course. I'm only three classes in, but the instructor insists that we say “yes sand” to any situation. I'm sure I'll eventually find out why sand is supposed to be important. So far, I've only learned how to be a good listener.
Did I mention I started taking improv comedy classes? No? Well, if I seem any wackier/sillier/zanier/punnier than usual lately, it's because I'm two and a half weeks into my first ever course in comedy.
I signed up for improv classes for the same reasons as anyone else: lack of social skills, lack of friends, and a desperate and awkward need to be funny at all times. Don't worry, I'm not looking to improve the quality of my writing, only the speed.
After three whole classes, I have to say, I'm having a hell of a lot more fun than I expected. It's broken up the week nicely, I've met cool people, and I can finally see some disappointed faces when I tell my jokes (an experience that's tricky to do via webcomics).
Only three more classes, and I'll be considered a master of the introductory level of funny.
To be honest, I'm having a hard time waiting for my next class. I should've done this years ago. I know it might not sound like much, but I feel great getting myself out into the world and trying something different… something I've never done before…
Something like being funny.
