Flat Earth

September 21, 2018 - News Post

Don’t Hit Save is 3 years old!!!

I know that doesn’t sound like much. Yet while you've been living your life, having kids, and accomplishing things... I’ve been writing comics to entertain YOU. What a waste of everyone’s time!

So how are you celebrating the 3 yeariversary?

I spent this week officially moving into my new island lair. Yes, I’m on an island now.

Oh and on this island, I’ve decided to celebrate this year the same way I do every year: by thoroughly examining the previous year's comics. Everyone loves annual reviews!

Year 3 - My Favorite Comics

These are not the best, just the ones I like the most.

  1. A Perfect Day
It's rare that I do visual jokes. This one seems like something out of a better strip than mine.
  2. Responsive Design
There are two jokes in one here, but not as many programmers caught it as I thought (similar to Infinite Loop, but a bit better in my mind). I work extra hard on these specifically to receive a “I see what you did there” comment from someone. It never happens
  3. Unlearning
I’m happy with how I handled all the requests to see Jeff without a beard. I can now refer people to this comic in real life.
  4. Ringing
This was the smoothest use of a news item to date. I have a bad habit of explaining the news in a jarring way, this blended with other parental comics seamlessly (in my mind, at least).
  5. Copy/Paste
I made this purely to send to people who say I should draw each panel independently. Duh.

Least Favorite

Not the least popular, but I would erase these if I could

  1. Empathy
In my haste to get something out on time for the news cycle, I jumped on Facebook doing something stupid and careless, rather than something purposely wrong. I could’ve done better.
  2. Patreon's Service Fee
Another timely news item. Patreon made a change to their fee structure and all the internet erupted in rage. I don’t mind the comic. I was all proud of myself for taking the moral high ground at a potential financial detriment to myself. But then patreon reversed their decision, yet I foolishly never went back and changed the comic.
  3. So Uh... Who Regulates The Regulators?
Too much space explaining the news, not enough space being funny. This was a very important issue. A regulatory government agency deliberately lied to the public about attacks that did not occur. This is ridiculous and dangerous. Saying "politics will be politics" was not a strong enough punchline or message. I regretted this one the moment I published it.

Firsts

I swear I introduced something new this year...

  1. Something's Amiss
New background, AND a new character IN the background? What more could readers ask?

Most Popular

These are the ones that social media, reddit, and readers like you seem to gravitate to.

  1. Wasted Time
I should probably waste less time on office assignments and more time making comics like this.
  2. Happenstance
This one was absolutely inspired by real life. I sometimes have a lucky life.
  3. Sleep Mode
This was a bit controversial. Why? I have no idea. When began making the rounds on the web, it was oddly followed by a several month run of angry and nasty messages, and very few that liked it. I don’t have a strong opinion either way. Love it or hate it, a looooot of eyeballs spent time reading this.
  4. Dust
When I last cleaned out my computer, the case contained more dust than electronics. I was shocked and appalled that I let it get that bad, yet I got a decent comic out of it. Like all of my most popular work, this one fills me with a weird mixture of shame, disgust, confusion, and pride.

And that's it! I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane as much as I enjoyed being done with it and going to bed.

I’ll see you next year or after I finish the next comic, whichever comes first.
